Home Is Cool Essay Project: Viewpoint On COVID19

With the recent turn of events surrounding the COVID19 virus, part of my Social Studies projects for my portfolio was to come up with an essay which would describe my viewpoint/experience as a home-schooled kid who is in a country where there are confirmed cases of COVID19.
I would like to share to you this essay which I just presented last week as part of my portfolio review. Lastly, let me leave you this Bible verse from the Book of Deuteronomy, "Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”  (Deuteronomy 31:6)

A Kid's Viewpoint on COVID 19
By Timothy D. Cuzon

“WHO says world in uncharted territory as US COVID-19 toll rises...” was the main headline today at Channel News Asia while I was writing this essay. As the COVID19 starts to spread not only in China but also in other parts of the world, you might be wondering, what life would be like if you were in a country where there are a lot of cases of COVID19 infections? Is the situation like the one in the movie “Contagion” where people are panicking and a great chaos can be seen in everywhere? Or rather would it be the end of it all for you and your family?

I am writing this essay with a goal in my mind to share how life is in a place where there are COVID19 cases. With the hope, that by sharing my experience here in Singapore it would give others the real picture of the situation. It was around second week of January when the COVID19 news broke out. By that time, news is that there is a virus similar to SARS that has been infecting hundreds of people in Wuhan, China. As the days passes by, deaths are also being reported. The virus spreads quickly as it reaches country after country. By 23rd of January, Singapore registered their first case of COVID19 infection. Case after case has been reported each day. Slowly, it started to trigger a change in the situation here in Singapore.

By the 2nd week of February, Singapore government has raised it disaster alert to it second highest level. Upon announcement, some people started to panic. A lot of people went to markets to stock up on supplies like noodles, toilet papers, canned goods, anything that they can buy at the market. Most of the groceries were ransacked over night!  Masks, sanitizers, thermometers and disinfectant were also very difficult to find. It would either be out of stock or the price is unreasonable.

I used to remember before the COVID 19 outbreak, my brother, mother, and I usually would go to the market twice a week, however, when the outbreak happened, we became a little bit more cautious and had to go to the market once a week instead. And in between the market days we would also go to the library. But as the alert was upgraded, temperature screening has been enforced in places like malls, library, community centers, schools, offices and many other places. Like in our library, previously, we can freely enter in the library, currently; there would be a man that would check our temperature and a woman who would login our details in their system. The purpose of getting our details is for easy contact tracing in any case that would encounter a person that would later become positive with COVID19. I do remember, as it was my first time I’ve gone through that, I had an embarrassing moment. After having my temperature checked, I walked straight pass to the hall of the library, but I noticed that my mom and brother didn’t come along with me; it seemed that they were calling me, so I went back. When I got there, I found out that I didn’t get my card check! And my mom was about to send out my brother to bring me back at the counter! Lesson learned, after temperature checking, I need to give my ID for them to get my details.

As negative as it may sound, COVID19 situation has its positive side too! One of which is we get to spend a lot more time with my father. Part of upgrade of alert level was instructing the companies to allow employees to work from home. It is a blessing indeed. My father usually goes to work early, and would return home around 7pm at night which only gives us some time to spend time with him. When the COVID 19 virus started spreading, he was allowed to work from home, and now, we can spend much more time with him. He would also be able to enjoy the comfort of his home while working. It also limits his exposure to a lot of people when he is travelling.

Another positive thing that COVID19 has brought me was strengthened my faith in God. There are times I don’t trust God too much; sometimes I get scared of what will happen to me. But during these challenging times of COVID 19 outbreak, I learned to trust God more that He is in control of everything. It has also taught me to look at things positively. Being positive will help me and others in hard times, and when you’re positive, you will spread your positivity to others as well. Lastly, COVID19 situation may seem to be a big problem for the whole world to handle but with constant prayer this too shall be over because as huge as the problem is, GOD is far more powerful and humongous than this COVID19 is!

Getting Up

Do you have an experience that you fell down on the floor or tripped? I had. Me, my brother, and my mom were going to fetch our dad...
